Santa Monica Trader Joes, Not Bicycle Friendly
I think these are supposed to be the bike racks for Trader Joes, but for real use, this does not count as bicycle parking. First of all they are installed so close to the railing and wall that you can't fit a bike in this thing. Second of all they are far away from the entrance, and at the end of an area obviously designed for storing shopping carts. I didn't see it first because of the shopping carts seen in next image.
Photos geotagged for location.
Documenting bicycle parking conditions in Santa Monica. There are some places that address bike parking demand with racks in the city, but many places were demand is much higher than supply or in the majority of cases, not existent. Lack of bike parking discourages making bicycle trips, and encourages haphazard methods to attach bicycles with less than ideal locks.
Using the Yuba Go-Getter pannier
Drew and I went grocery shopping at the Trader Joe's near Sheffield and Clybourn. It's on the second level of a multi-story, street facing building.
Pedestrian access to this store is atrocious.
1. Park your bike on a narrow sidewalk.
2. Enter either Door A or Door B. Door A has stairs to Trader Joe's. Door B has an elevator to Trader Joe's.
3. After ascending to the second story through either Door A or Door B, walk across a parking lot to the store entrance. The parking lot is INSIDE and nominally sealed off - that means the fumes from cars are with you as you walk from the stairs or elevator to the front door.
4. Shop
5. Reverse actions 1-3.
The same goes for accessing Aldi, but that store is on the first floor, 8 steps up from ground level.
